HAEUNDAE BEACH, BUSAN

... well, what can i say, another party ... for the usual suspects and party animals (or, a sociological study on the perfect balance to be found among comaraderie, inspiration, mutual support, general energy release after months and years of hard work, harmless festive flirts, exchange of cultural differences and out-of-the-box ideas --- and/or self-promotion, useless blah-blah, festie addiction so much so that some are seen in the circuit for years without burying the head in another creation (too much work!), pointless speculations and conspiracy theories, unjustified star-turns ... ) ... sincerely thankful for the continued existence of BIFF ... where the people involved in making this festival happen seem to embody and concentrate on all the above-mentioned positive elements of a film festival ... just a lovely feeling to be in Busan, especially when young filmmakers come up to you to say "remember me?  I was at the 'clinic' last year and here I am, showing my film this year" ... and finally meeting up with two committed, talented FB friends for years but no face-to-face until this year's BIFF, another positive effect of festivals amidst the other stuff one must not take away with one nor take seriously when the sun rises.

More and more, since an unexpected but programmed personal time-out in October, I feel the absurdity of a big part of our life, with all the ridiculous priorities and shallow complaints, slavery to a system of values dictated and fanned by supports that don’t require us to think.  And so what if we think, anyway, do we opt to be vegetarian, vegan, minimalist, all kinds of other labels everyday more trendy and yesterday’s news by tomorrow? ... Will this black humour lift, will we survive more black Friday’s, how do we de-select what’s not essential but not become some cynical grumpy unhappy and therefore unwise old hermit ? Well, to each essential value , probably some frivolous silly not-so-correct side-dishes come along, maybe that’s what our little brains need to be entertained.  Heaven forbid that along this line of reasoning I will finally ask what the hell is so interesting about cinema that we devote all our life to it ... or for that matter, about art, about literature, about anything someone devotes all one’s life to.  Better not stop and think about that because the answer might be pretty disheartening.  Hmmmm.  Could stupid Black Friday provoke such a tidal wave of existential angst ?

MY ONLY SEASON

... and this would come every year around x'mas time, from year 15 in Hongkong to year xxx as mother of 3 in the Paris suburbs.  A Torte from Hôtel Sacher in Vienna where I've never managed to set foot in yet. But the sender is long gone, gone too young ... my very first penpal connected through the Children's Corner in the South China Morning Post ...

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.

CITY HALL 2, HONG KONG (or L'HÔTEL DE VILLE, HONG KONG)

約翰科巴爾(John Kobal)是這類型電影的專家,他生於加拿大,在倫敦定居幾十年,以擁有荷李活影星相片的珍藏見稱,他應邀來大學授課, his extravangantly and endearingly outrageous personal style contrasted sharply with the priests who taught us cinema in this Jesuit College。
